Weekly Roundup - Chicago Events

Weekly Roundup

Chicago Events November 6-12

Good Morning. Is anyone else still recovering from the weekend? I had quite a full and fun weekend hitting the town hanging out with friends, one in from LA. I was honored to be given elite status at the Underground where I celebrated awesome friends Saturday night. I also celebrated my dad’s birthday this weekend even though it’s actually on November 7 (he and my oldest sister share a birthday).

I attended an incredibly fun Instagram/Blogger Dip Party put on by The Tipsy House Wife, Sassy Confetti, and The Chicago Good Life. If you’re not following any of them, you totally should. We gorged on amazing dips. Mine included a trio of fall dips: Oh My Gourd (A Sharp Cheddar Cheese Butternut Squash Dip), Sprout It Out (A Hot Mozzarella & Parmesan Cheese Brussels Sprouts Dip with Bacon), and The Berry Best (A White Cheddar and Cranberry Cinnamon Goat Cheese Dip). Here I am with all of them:

And then I closed out my weekend with a visit to the 2nd annual Strange Foods Festival. Beef tongue, silk worms, grasshoppers, and even ant larvae soup was served among other unique delicacies. None of it was really for me but I kept an openmind and tasted most of the offerings.

Well, enough about my weekend, here is your Weekly Round Up. There are not as many events going on this week, but a few for you to enjoy plus I’m sharing some great news at the end so as always, be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom of this post/message. If you were a fan of the former Snaggletooth, like me, you’ll be happy to know that co-owner and chef Jennifer Kim will be opening a new restaurant.

Passerotto

Chef Jennifer Kim is proud to announce her forthcoming restaurant, Passerotto, to Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood. This will be the second restaurant and first solo venture from the acclaimed chef who most recently was the co-owner of Lakeview’s Snaggletooth.

Passerotto, which translates to “little sparrow” in Italian, will be a traditional Korean restaurant serving Kim’s takes on the dishes she grew up eating. The name is a nod to her father and his childhood nickname for her. “When I was growing up, my Dad would say I had tiny bird feet, like a sparrow” says Kim.

Diners will be treated to dishes inspired by Kim’s Korean heritage and the progressive menu will feature a selection of authentic Korean dishes, with some Italian influence, all designed to be shared.

Passerotto is unabashedly Korean though guests will find some Italian inspiration across the menu. “If Korean food was what shaped my life, then Italian food was what changed my life” Kim states. “My boyfriend Luca comes from Livorno, a small town off the coast of central Tuscany, and for him food was synonymous with love and family which is very familiar to me. When we started cooking together and exploring each other’s cultures I was able to find a lot of common ground in these two seemingly opposite cuisines.”

While Kim is still finalizing the menu sample dishes might include; Sulleontang Tortellini with braised oxtail, brodo, daikon radish and Lambrusco, which is Kim’s take on the traditional Korean ox bone soup and Jang-Jorim with Creamy Rice, a soy-braised beef dish that Kim’s mother would frequently serve for weeknight dinners.

Kim also plans on serving a few large format dishes for a pair. Most notable will be her Seasonal Ssam, which literally translates to “wrapped.” This interactive style of eating is most commonly found at Korean BBQ restaurants where meat is accompanied by rice, leafy greens, banchan and ssamjang as well as greens like red leaf lettuce or sesame leaves for wrapping.

The bar program will highlight a limited but well-rounded beer selection including some large format Korean-style beers as well as a small production wine program. Craft cocktails with influences from both Korea and Italy will be available as well.

Passerotto is currently on track for a February 2018 opening.
