The Fifty/50 Group is Elevating Chicago’s Cocktail Scene at new Rooftop Bar, Apogee

If anyone asks you, “Where do you summer,” let them know you’ll be hanging at the Fifty/50 Restaurant Group’s newest concept, Apogee Lounge. Translating to ‘the highest point,’ the team is taking mixology to new heights in the former space of the Vertigo Sky Lounge atop the Dana Hotel. The lineup of cocktails are some of the most Instagram-worthy, including the Where Do You Summer served in a fresh coconut with the Apogee logo engraved on it.

Cocktails served in coconuts might be nothing new but that’s just where the bar menu begins. If you’re ready to take off your training wheels, flip through the bright colorful cocktail catalog and dare to venture into a whimsical world of adult beverages guaranteed to wow any imbiber!

Panda Party and 221 B

On the more light and refreshing side are the Sancerre and the Nymph which are representative of bar director, Benjamin Schiller’s typical style. The Sancerre is concocted with Martin Miller Gin, Grapefruit, Lemongrass, and Pear Ice! The Nymph begins with Tito’s Vodka and comes together with the additions of Elderflower Rose Sparkling and Raspberry Powder then finished off with an edible butterfly boasting the bar’s name. The focal point of this drink, though, is Schiller’s popular flower ice cubes inspired by his grandmother Doris, an avid gardener.

Panda Party, Mr. Nice Guy, 221 B

Veer off the beaten path to Baker Street in London with the 221 B which gives a nod to Sherlock Holmes. Served in a unique glass vessel it’s made with Ford’s Gin, Aperol, Pimm’s No. 1, Tangerine, Strawberry, Aprium, and Cotton Candy topped with Basil Powder.

If you’re out with the crew, order one of Apogee’s shareable cocktails. Just watch out for Mr. Nice Guy. He’s handsome and comes bearing flowers but he packs quite a punch. Though, this is one guy you won’t mind sharing with friends. And while the Fibonacci is named after the numerical sequence, no one will expect you to do any math while enjoying it. Besides, you’ll want to be cautious when drinking this cocktail as it’s served in a glass seashell with two glass straws all hand blown by Ignite Glass.

With a plethora of intricate cocktails available, great service and consistency will be the focus. Guests will be able to grab a drink from 1 of 4 bartenders at the main bar and 1 of 2 bartenders at the outdoor bar. Plus there will be additional service bartenders lending support.

Apogee’s vintage vibe is a refreshing welcome to River North’s more contemporary atmosphere. A mix of walnut wood paneling, marble, brass, plush mohair, and retro light fixtures creates a relaxed yet sophisticated ambiance. Rumors abound that the Fifty/50 Group is taking over The Dana Hotel from top to bottom. While Apogee is officially open to the public, the restaurant group has plans to turn Freestyle Food + Drink on the ground level of the Dana Hotel into a seafood-focused eatery.
