Local REI Force of Nature Class

Did you know that 43% of women say that finding someone to go outdoors with is a barrier?

To change this – as part of the REI Force of Nature commitment, on May 6, REI Outdoor School will offer over 400 events/classes across the country and more than 1,000+ experiences throughout the summer – geared towards helping women live a life outdoors.

REI believes that the outdoor industry can do a better job of ensuring that all women are just as inspired and equipped as men to embrace life outside. The recent Force of Nature launch aims to increase women’s participation in the outdoors – women who spend just one hour a day outside say they feel happier, more adventurous and more confident.

To experience this effort first-hand, would you be interested in participating in one of these classes or promoting the events? Chicago area activities include bike maintenance basics (Lincoln Park REI), bike Chicago day of demos (Dvorak Park) and learn to kayak class (Jackson Park Harbor). If you’re interested, I can get you a ticket if someone from your team would like to attend/cover. This is a great visual/photo opportunity. We may also be able to connect you with an REI expert in your area who can speak to more about the events and this commitment.

Further details about the REI Force of Nature effort are below.

On April 3, the nation’s largest retail co-op announced #ForceofNature – REI’s long-term effort to advance gender equity in the outdoors.

The effort will include:

  • REI committing to putting women first in all marketing content and storytelling for the rest of 2017, and partnered with Outside to publish their first-ever all women’s May issue on stands now.
  • 300+ Outdoor School events and classes across the country for women on May 6. Through summer, we’ll hold over 1,000 experiences designed to educate women to live a life outdoors, including weekly events on “Force Wednesday” – register now!
  • Continuing to support gender equality on the leadership level—Today, 42% of retail store and sales managers are women, up from 36% in 2014. 45% of REI employees are women; 48% at headquarters and 43% in our retail stores and distribution centers.
  • Goodbye “pink and shrink.” For the past two decades, REI has made major progress to develop gear for women by women, and is now working on pushing harder into technical equipment.
