On the eve of September 30th, Chicagoans raised their glasses at the Independent Spirits Expo toasting artisinal spirits from around the world. The Hilton Chicago played host to the world’s largest gathering of independently produced and owned spirits spanning the globe. Guests had an opportunity to meet distillers, brand owners, and importers of small batch, unique, and artisinal spirtis. Brand owners and bartenders mixed and poured drinks that included vodka, whisky, rum, tequila, mezcal, cognac, and more.

Though I would have loved to taste everything available, I had to be smart and responsible. I strolled up and down the aisles eying all the great companies represented and chose several to sample from before making my “responsible.” exit. There were definitley brands that stood out for either creating a unique and delicious spirit or an excellent and innovative product for making an excellenet cocktail.

Some of my favorites included the following:

Bittercube – Bittercube hand crafts six varieties of artisinal bitters over a two month process staying active in every stage of the bitters from conception to bottling. Bittercube bitters are developed right here in the midwest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and created in Madison, Wisconsin. And it is all done by hand using only raw ingredients. The six varieties available include Blackstrap, Bolivar, Cherry Bark Vanilla, Jamaican #1, Jamaican #2, and Orange. Learn more at bittercube.com.

Batch 206 Mad Mint Vodka – I can’t wait to add a bottle of this vodka to my collection. It’s cool and minty with hints of chocolate and vanilla. It’s strong aroma is just the opening to its delicious complexity. Though it has an intense and refreshing strong mint flavor, it’s all natural and actually uses less sugar than other flavored vodkas. It’s impressivle smooth and can be served chilled, straigh up, or mixed into a variety of cocktails. Learn more at batch206.com.

CH Distillery – CH Distillery recently celebrated their one year anniversary in Chicago. They craft outstanding spirits and offer tours of their distillery educating guests about the science of making alcohol. They created a full bar inside their distillery crafting incredible cocktails and offering up delicious food. I became an immediate fan when I firsted tasted their products at the Randolph Street Market which happens the last weekend of every month at Plumbers Hall. Their vodka is one of my favorites and I always have a bottle at my home. I love everything they create including their gin which is my least favorite liquor to drink.
